В 1975 году было решено поставить модель на конвейер, и через два года было выпущено первое авто. Примечательно, что порядка 80% производства шло на экспорт. Модель Lada 4x4 стала единственным советским транспортным средством, реализуемым в Японии. Продажи шли очень хорошо, и вскоре производственный план был повышен с 25 тысяч экземпляров в год до 50 тысяч машин, а затем и до 70 тысяч. Сегодня с конвейера сходят машины третьего поколения, а сама модель обзавелась множеством модификаций, при этом практически не изменившись внешне.
